Quantum Life & Time Machines [10/14/01]
Reality is fractally generated and self-similar across scale. That means that the basic processes that form the microscopic world also effect the macroscopic world, although perhaps indirectly. Quantum Mechanics rules the microscopic world. Integral to the idea of quantum mechanics is that you walk in a realm of multiple realities. Which reality (scientifically called a "result") that manifests is always dependent on the *observer's* choice. Reality is somehow generated by the observer.
Consciousness is sometimes said to be a feedback loop of self-awareness embedded in Reality. Self-reflection. Could this incremental process of mind (observed primarily in biology) be the "act of observation" that brings our Reality into existence?
It would seem that the bizarre, paradoxical reports from the field of quantum mechanics also apply to the macroscopic levels of Reality. And by "macroscopic", I mean the biggest scope possible from a metaphysical standpoint: your own perception of your own self. So the human soul and human fate has a quantum mechanical aspect in that there are always a multitude of Realities to choose from, selected by the observer. [The observer being the soul itself-- the Ego is acting as the observer to continually collapse (actualize) the quantum mechanical system that is your life].

While on the topic of the continuum of multiple realities, let us shift the focus to Time Machines...
Imagine the effect of the invention of a "Time Machine". Among the many effects, any time traveler would be able to transport himself back in time to a point in his/her own life. The obvious impulse would be to alter any "bad" things that have happened to you over your life. [For example, go back in time to prevent the car accident that just killed a family member]. In a sense, you have the ability to "custom-craft" your life such that you are ultimately successful in everything you do. I believe this process would act in a feedback loop and would create a truly creative, "utopian" being. [as aspired to in myth and legend throughout history]. I envision a sort of "lifeline feedback loop" would be created. All of a persons Life/Reality is based on their *perception*. This is what creates your sense of self and your own personal history ["you" are the sum total of all that your being has perceived and processed]. But once you begin to consciously control your destiny via time travel, your exponentially enhanced perception would eventually result in that you become a "god" [for lack of a better term]. The term "god" is not necessarily meant literally-- but rather you would advance to a level of awareness that is generally beyond most humans, most of the time. You would also live *much* longer. [a key to immortality, perhaps?]. Because if you were ever "killed" in a car accident, your family members could use the time machine to prevent the accident, and thus you wouldn't "die" on that timeline.
I won't go into "Killing Your Grandfather" paradoxes. The very heart of the idea of time travel is a glaring paradox. But just because something is paradoxical, doesn't necessarily mean it can never be resolved in some way. So the invention of some manner of time machine is within my realm of possibility. [I mean, why not?] Humans think they're so smart. [hardly-- as a race, we're still rookies in the field of science, or any field of knowledge for that matter.]
Now Terence McKenna postulated that WHEN a human being invents a time machine, that will signal the End of History. The universe ends at that moment. Why? Because of the idea that a time traveler cannot travel to a point in time *before* the invention of the Time Machine. But then at the moment of it's invention, swarms of time travelers would arrive amongst us. Maybe the process would take a few hours or days or years [however these things work...], but everyone in the world would eventually "enter the continuum" of Reality-Shifters [being those who have the capacity to time travel].
This time-traveling collective would essentially become "God" in the true sense of the word. But of course this means the End of the Universe. [And of course, if you're already a time-traveling God, then time is not really an issue. It may only take 5 "seconds" to occur, but this is irrelevant]. The second Big Bang will be immediately preceded by the exponential complexification of our species brought on by time travel. The talking monkeys finally touch the Transcendental Mystery at the End of Time and fuse back with the Godhead. Until it all starts again somewhere else.
This may sound to be a very unlikely scenario. Maybe it is... that is, unless someone invents a time machine. :)
